Look 6: The Snake

Autumn Winter 2019 / 2020

This sinuous look marks the end of the prince’s journey; the intrepid adventurer has decided that he has learned everything he can learn on Earth, but he doesn’t know how to get back to his home planet. The fox is gone, and the birds have flown away. Enter the snake, an innocuous coil of gold, who offers to take him farther than any spaceship could.

Here, the exaggerated collar represents a cobra’s head, whereas the ivory-colored closures are ribbed, nautical, ropey–evoking the scutes of a snake’s belly. This is the first look in the collection featuring a streamlined pant without a gathered hem, nicely taut like the snake against the prince’s ankle.

“Here’s the place. Let me go on alone.”
And he sat down because he was frightened.
Then he said:
“You know . . . my flower . . . I’m responsible for her. And she’s so weak! And so naive. She has four ridiculous thorns to defend her against the world . . .”
“I sat down, too, because I was unable to stand any longer.
He said, “There . . . That’s all . . .” He hesitated a little longer, then he stood up. He took a step. I couldn’t move.
There was nothing but a yellow flash close to his ankle. He remained motionless for an instant. He didn’t cry out. He fell gently, the way a tree falls. There wasn’t even a sound, because of the sand.” (Source)
